ArtLabs stance on AI ethics

We have previously discussed AI ethics, as reported by artists. So where do we stand at ArtLab?

Our stance (and everyone needs their own):

Time marches forward. As developers and artists, every month a new tool or process is developed that automates part of our skillset. Every artist and developer is under pressure to adopt these new tools, and within those, they must decide what skills they keep manual, becoming their their craft. So for us, AI supports artists when it amplifies their ability to explore their craft. AI is against artists when it reduces their ability to explore their skills, when there is no place for them.

We believe in uses of AI that empower creatives

If you are adopting, and growing, and staying current, you should not have to worry about theft, infringement, or abuse. With that said our values follow

  1. We feel it is ok for robots to see and learn from all public visuals.
  2. No, we do not feel platforms should be allowed to generate art in the obvious likeness of other artists.
  3. We feel people should be able to generate what you like on their own hardware
  4. No, we do not feel it is ok to share work that copies or infringes on other artists style
  5. Yes, we believe satire, political parody, and likeness is ok, as long as it is not a deep fake

We feel using new automation tools, technology that empowers artists, is ok. That is our goal. Our mission is to do everything we can to empower artists. Our values are crafted in a way we feel serves creators best, and if ever our stance seems in conflict with the success of creatives, we will happily revise them.
